THE SUGAR GREMLIN The body is an efficient instrument that uses sugars to create energy, driving brain function and movement. Given a preference, the body will always opt for the most efficient routes to obtain energy and perfom tasks – and that can sometimes be the worst route for managing our energy resources. Blood sugar spikes when we eat easy carbs. Refined sugars, inverted sugars (extra sweet) and processed starchy foods – especially white bread, pasta, and mashed potato – which themselves are usually accompanied by sugary and fatty spreads, sauces and toppings, really get into the bloodstream fast. They are great source of energy while we are working hard. Sugary foods are best for high performance and movement. Ships requiring riggers and deck hands, loaded their shipmates up on sugars (and alcohol rations) to keep the ship ship-shape.
